Why don’t women recognize the symptoms of perimenopause?

Over a woman’s lifetime, hormonal changes can cause challenges and symptoms that, without truly understanding why they are happening, can be frustrating and overwhelming. During perimenopause women often experience physical and psychological symptoms. These may occur for a few weeks, months or sometimes over several years.Symptoms may come and go, or occur regularly.

Hot flashes and night sweats are the hallmark of menopause. But during the perimenopause years (5-10 years before actual menopause) women may also experience insomnia, headaches, mood swings, irritability, loss of libido, vaginal dryness, fuzzy thinking, and complaints of “just not feeling like themselves.” These symptoms often have a negative and sometimes destructive impact on a woman’s daily life.Because of their age – and because they are not having hot flashes – perimenopausal women don’t think hormonal fluctuations could be the cause. Blood testing for hormones during the perimenopause period is not accurate as these hormones can fluctuate from day to day, which is part of the cause of the disruptive symptoms.

Women do not always get accurate information about hormone therapy, current research, and bioidentical hormones. In fact, many of the stories perpetuated in popular media are simply inaccurate and outdated. Women are often prescribed sleeping pills and antidepressants at this time instead of considering hormones. Bioidentical hormone therapy can help alleviate these troublesome symptoms.
